Bunkai (analysis) is the intellectual and analytical study of the self-defence techniques and applications of Goju-Ryu Karate-Do. It is also known as Bunkai Oyo (analysis/application). Bunkai can be applied to all Goju-Ryu techniques. For example, the study of the applications of Kihon (basics) would be called Kihon Bunkai. However, Bunkai is most commonly applied to the various Kata of Goju-Ryu Karate-Do and is called Kata Bunkai.

Each movement or sequence in a Kata contains many self-defence applications. Knowing the applications to the Kata techniques is extremely important. These applications were deemed essential to the creators of the various Kata; were instrumental to Kata development and represent the most important self-defence skills of Goju-Ryu Karate-Do. Without the knowledge of Bunkai, the study of Karate would be incomplete. The movements would be conceived as merely form and would be performed as a hollow choreographed dance.

The study of Bunkai develops intellect and seriously devastating self-defence techniques.
